right now. he's going to tell us a little bit about what we should expect from the president and what he'll be talking about. obviously, chris, gun violence has been a major issue in chicago for many, many months now and the president has been called to this question, why hasn't he dealt with more forcibly in his remarks in a few moments, chris? >> reporter: that's right. it sets off in the '80s where he began his career as a community organizer. he would become a state legislator and u.s. senator. the connection is great. he still has a home here. the 15-year-old hadiya pendleton was killed a mile from where his job is. the connection is very real for him. the gun violence rate is one of the highest in the country. the poverty rate in the south side of chicago where he will be speaking today, where he was once a community organizer, one of the highest in the country. we've been here a couple of days, talking to community organizers. they say the need has never been greater. so when the president comes here, politically the main thing is to give his message from the state of the union an

's different? we have seen an enormous increase in the u.s. trade deficit, especially with countries like china. today, they happened to release a report that looked at the effect of currency manipulation, perhaps the single most important factor and explain the growth of our trade deficit. eliminating the trade deficit or eliminating currency manipulation could reduce the trade as a by roughly $190-$490 billion. doing this would increase manufacturing employment by up to 1 million jobs. that's a big downpayments in the whole we have created in manufacturing and employment. one thing we need to do is create demand. that is what we did do but we did not do that in the last decade. we need to shift the demand to domestic produced goods resulting in the hiring of domestic workers. manufacturing jobs are amongst the best for workers especially for those without a college degree. high wages, good benefits. >> bruce, you worked in washington, d.c., and brookings is right off dupont. >> i am mostly on a plane. >> industrial policy is a dirty word. if you go to any other domestic place, it will land yo

has just heard from the president. or at least you used to be. because now republicans have come up with yet another innovation for this most ancient american political ritual. they were the first ones who came up with the rebuttal address in 1966. and now since barack obama has been president, they have come up with a new idea. the idea of doing not just a rebuttal to the president's state of the union address, but also a rebuttal to their own rebuttal. what? yes. for the third year in a row now, republicans are rebutting themselves as well as rebutting the president. what could possibly go wrong? the first year was 2011 when minnesota congresswoman and eventual presidential candidate michele bachmann gave not the republican party response, but the tea party republican response to the republican response to president obama's state of the union while making meaningful eye contact with something other than the camera that was pointed at her. that was the first one. the year after that, the tea party republican response to the republican response to the state of the union was given by

campus and that is where news 4's megan mcgrath is live with the latest information. megan, bring us up to speed. >> reporter: aaron, we received an update from prince george's county police and they say this is a murder-suicide involving three university of maryland students. all roommates. all living in a home in the 8700 block of 36th avenue. here in college park. now, as i mentioned, the three students were all roommates living in this home. one of the men lit a fire in the basement. then there was a confrontation which turned deadly. >> the preliminary investigation shows that the gunman set a fire in the basement of the home in which all three men lived. when two of the roommates went to investigate what was going on, they confronted the suspect. all three then left the house and in the front of the home, the suspect began firing. he shot one of the men and as the second man was running away from the scene, he shot that roommate as well. >> one of the roommates was pronounced dead at the hospital. that second roommate is expected to survive, although he was injured. as for the gun

to use that as a bargaining chip again. we saw how damaging bringing into question the credit worthyness of the government. the fight should not be should we pay the bill? >> there is an interesting question about in retrospect if republicans leveraging the debt limit to get a bill that cut spending by $1 to $2 trillion going forward whether that was worth it? they introduced liquidity risk. if you don't cut spending we're not going to vote for a debt limit increase. it worked. the president agreed to cut the spending by a significant amount. now, would you like that negotiation had resulted from not having made that threat? absolutely. but do you think it would have occurred? there's the difference. i would never be one to advocate that congress should not increase the debt limit. they should. when this came up in the summer of 2011 i wrote that and they put that in the pages of "the initial review." i was arguing against those who say let's look and creating a cash crunch. that is the wrong thing to do. congress has the ability to decide what they want to attach to the legislation. tha

system. for us, we'll likely see the wintry mix transition to a cold rain today, with highs to the upper 30s to about 40. local temperatures, 36 reagan national. 33 dulles. and 35 at bwi marshall. just above freezing and that's a major player in the forecast over the next couple of hours. the red you see, let's talk about the big picture, the red, those are blizzard warnings. blizzard warnings from new york city to boston. that includes providence and hartford. could experience 18 to 24 inches plus of snow over the next 24 hours. areas in pink, most of new york, that's a winter storm warning. and locally we're dealing with this winter weather advisory and overnight the weather service included howard county and montgomery county, and loudoun county under a weather advisory until 11:00 this morning. there's your forecast. clouds by 5:00 p.m. though the winds will pick up. that will be another story. gusting to 40 miles per hour later tonight as the storm cranks up. more details coming up in a few minutes. let's do traffic and julie wright has your latest on the roads. >> on the southbound
